Having spent the entire film swapping bodies and slowly losing their memories of each other, Taki and Mitsuha pass one another on a long staircase in the film’s climax — both sensing something achingly familiar, neither able to place it. Turning back in tears, this is the line each of them calls out, and it’s the emotional center the entire story has been building toward.

The staircase used for this scene is a real one, at Suga Shrine in Yotsuya, Shinjuku, Tokyo — a short walk from Yotsuya Station. It sits on a quiet residential street, so visit respectfully and be mindful of the neighborhood.
